Tennis icon’s huge statement about Rafael Nadal’s career

Rafael Nadal may have won an unprecedented 21 men’s major titles, 13 French Opens, and a career Grand Slam, but former World No.4 Greg Rusedski believes the 2022 Australian Open was the Spaniard’s crowning achievement.

Nadal prevailed in what many have described as the ‘greatest comeback’ in the Open Era to defeat Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in the Melbourne Park final.

The Spaniard made the bombshell admission afterwards that he thought it might have been his final appearance at the Australian Open but the stunning victory had fuelled his fire.

Being honest, one month and a half ago, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to be back playing tennis again,” he said after missing the second half of 2021 with a foot injury.

“You really don’t know how much I fought to be here.

“Maybe one month and a half ago I would have said this would be my last Australian Open. But now that’s plenty of energy to keep going.”
