VERTISEMENT Djokovic ended up being deported from Australia after a whirlwind week Down Under before the first major of 2022.The Serbian tennis star had initially been given a medical exemption to take part in the event. But the validity of Djokovic’s exemption from the Covid-19 vaccination was soon questioned by Border Force officials.

After initially winning his court case to be allowed into the country, Immigration minister Alex Hawke then exercised his personal power to cancel Djokovic’s visa for a second time.

That decision was then upheld by Chief Justice Allsop in Federal Court with three judges coming to the conclusion that Djokovic’s anti-vax views could be a threat to Australia’s public health.

The whole fiasco threatened to overshadow the Australian Open, but ultimately cost Djokovic a chance to win his 21st Grand Slam title. There has since been further threats that he may be unable to compete in the French Open.
