Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson v Roman Reigns: Reason major WWE WrestleMania match may not happen

After close to two years of speculation, a WWE WrestleMania dream match between The Rock and Roman Reigns may not happen next year.

We may still be over a month away from WrestleMania 38, but reports state that WWE already knows what its main event is going to be for WrestleMania 39 next year.

Reports have indicated that WWE is hoping to have Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson face Roman Reigns at next year’s huge show, but it’s now been questioned if that match is going to be able to go down.

It’s no secret that The Rock is one busy guy, given his commitments to his acting and sports careers, so a run in WWE in 2023 may not be possible.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer suggested that The Rock’s XFL working with the NFL means that the 49-year-old may no longer be able to do some work with WWE.

“Dwayne being all over next year promoting this thing (the XFL), which could be interesting because next year’s the WrestleMania that he was supposed to work with Roman Reigns, and that would be in April, and that’s probably gonna be the middle of the season.”

That isn’t all, as Meltzer explained that Rock won’t be able to have the big match if he has any movie commitments a few months either side of WrestleMania 39:

“If he’s got any kind of an action movie deal within a couple of months (of WrestleMania), let alone, if he’s got one that takes place during that period there’s no way he would do it (the match).

If it’s even like a month or two after, they wouldn’t let him because the insurance and things like that would be too high. That’s why he never did another one.”

Meltzer went on to explain that he doubts that The Rock is going to be able to both promote the XFL and NFL deal, and also work WrestleMania, also because of all his other commitments:

“If he wants to do a clean slate (with movies) and not do anything… still he’s gonna be promoting this stuff (XFL), he can still train, but I don’t think he can promote this stuff and do (WrestleMania).

It’s not just movies, he’s got Ballers, Young Rock, TV shows that he does. So I know that’s kind of the plan for next year (Rock vs Reigns), but yeah the guy’s got a lot on his plate that’s gonna be higher priority.”

Of course, it is possible that The Rock and WWE have already come to a deal to have him work WrestleMania 39, which will ensure that he’s free for the show.
