Dubai Tennis Championships: Sania Mirza-Lucie Hradecka lose in semifinals

Sania Mirza of India and her Czech partner Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic squandered a golden opportunity to lose the Dubai Tennis Championships doubles semifinal tonight.

Sania and Hradecka fell 6-2 2-6 7-10 against Lyudmyla Kichenok of Ukraine and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia on Friday night after controlling the opening set.

The Indo-Czech pair, who were given a wild card for the competition, saved 11 break points in the first set and converted two of the three to take a 1-0 lead in the WTA 500 tournament.

The two, however, were unable to maintain their momentum, as Kichenok and Ostapenko leveled the match in the second set and subsequently went on to win the match.

In 2013, the veteran Indian won the doubles title with Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.

The 35-year-old, who is India’s most successful female tennis player with six Grand Slam wins to her credit, including three mixed doubles titles, had previously stated that 2022 will be her final season.
